Memories from the Past

50 Years Vicar at the Church he helped to build

Derby's oldest vicar, the Rev. Lancelot Sydney Currey, celebrates the 50th anniversary of his induction as Vicar of Osmaston-by-Derby early next year. In his booklined study, with its collection of sporting prints above the fireplace, 82-year-old Mr Currey told a "Telegraph" reporter: "I suppose I really ought to retire, but I cannot imagine living anywhere else. I will go on as long as I can." Mr Currey has seen the new parish church of St Osmund's grow up. He helped to huild it, and he helped to build the vicarage where he has lived for the last 25 years. His one regret is that permanent parish rooms will not be built in his lifetime. If it had not been for the war, they would have completed... He is a son of the late Mr B.S. Currey, of Little Easton.
One of his brothers joined his father in the family firm of solicitors; another was Mr. Percy Currey, an architect, who designed St Osmund's Church.

Osmaston-by-Derby Poplars Threaten Church

60 trees at St Osdmund's get the axe Picturesque though poplar trees may be, the roots of more than 60 are threatening a Derby church and its vicarage. In order to prevent any serious damage being caused by the ever-spreading roots, the trees surrounding St Osmund's London Road, are to be felled.
